05/25/09 WEIGHTLIFTING: 1st Youth World Championships conclude in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Team Armenia finishes the competition with one silver medal by Smbat Margaryan in the 56kg category.

A less than impressive effort by team Armenia found our athletes on the flight back to Yerevan with the lone Silver medal, as Smbat Margaryan was able to claim 2nd place in the 56kg category.

In the 50kg category, Vardan Militosyan finished in 12th place with a 176kg lift, as he was placed in the group B starting list. In the 56kg the afformentioned Smbat Margaryan was successful in claiming 2nd place and the first Silver medal for Team Armenia behind China's Xiong Chen.

In the 62kg category, Vladik Karapetyan had the best result in the Group B competition with a 235kg lift, which would place him 12th overall. In the same weight category, David Barsegyan of Russia finished in 8th place with a lift of 244kgs.

The 69kg category had Rafi Melikyan finish 7th with a 261kg lift, while in the 77kg category Aren Nersesyan duplicated the same 7th place finish with a 279kg effort.

In the 85kg category Azat Sayadyan would finish in the familiar 7th spot with a 288kg lift, while the duo of Misha Muradyan and Hrach Gharibyan would conclude the tournament in 8th and 6th place respectively in the 94+ category. Karen Martirosyan representing Russia earned his team the Bronze Medal in the 94+ category behind the Iranian duo who took the Gold and Silver.

Overall, the performance of Team Armenia was less than impressive and was a middle of the pack effort. Let's hope that these athletes will develope into stars in the upcoming years.
