WRESTLING: After a strong push, Armenian junior wrestling team comes away empty handed

Armenian wrestlers reach fight for medals in two weight categories but come away empty handed.

In the second and final day of the Greco-Roman competition in Tbilisi at the 2009 European Junior Wrestling Championships Armenian had four wrestlers in various weight categories. In the 50kg category Sargis Khachatryan started off by defeating opponents from Poland and Finland to reach the semi-finals, but would lose to the eventual Gold Medalist from Georgia. Sargis Khachatryan would then have the opportunity to earn the Bronze medal for Team Armenia but would fail to defeat his Azerbaijani opponent in the last of the repechage, coming away empty handed.

Of the other three competitors Robert Hovhannisyan (60kg,) Rafik Manukyan (74kg,) and Eduard Soghomonyan (96kg) all lost their first matches. Robert Hohannisyan would get a second chance in the repechage round since his first round defeat was to the Georgian wrestler who reached the Final, but alas Hovhannisyan could not overcome his Russian opponent and finished the tournament leaving Team Armenia with just one Bronze medal in the Greco-Roman category.

In tomorrow’s action the Armenian Freestyle wrestling team will take the mat as Ohan Gikinyan (55kg,) Davit Felix Khachatryan (66kg,) and Sergey Khachatryan (84kg) will compete for medals.
