05/21/09 WEIGHTLIFTING: Smbat Margaryan wins Silver medal at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships in Thailand

Smbat Margaryan wins the first medal for Team Armenia by taking second in the 56kg category.

With the First ever Youth World Championships underway in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Team Armenia won its' first medal on the performance of Smbat Margaryan who finished 2nd behind China's Xiong Chen. The Youth World Championships are also a qualification tournament for the first ever Youth Olympic Games which will take place in 2010.

Team Armenia had two other weightlifters in the 50kg and 62kg categories compete yesterday. Vardan Militosyan finished 12th overall in teh 50kg category, while Vladik Karapetyan repeated the same feat by finishing 12th in the 62kg category.

In tomorrow's contests, Armenia will be represented by Rafik Melikyan in the 69kg category, and Aren Nersisyan in the 77kg category. Azat Sayadyan will perform for team in Armenia the following day in the 85kg category, and the competition will conclude on the 24th with the 94+ kg category where Armenia will be represented by Misha Muradyan and Hrach Gharibyan.
