For the second day in a row, an Armenian weightlifter has finished second to a Russian weightlifter at the 2009 European Weightlifting Championships in Bucharest, Romania. Yesterday Nazik Avdalyan finished second to Oxana Silvenko of Russia in the Women's 69kg category, and today Hripsime Khurshudyan conceded to Natalia Zabolotnaya of Russia to earn Armenia its' second Silver medal in as many days.
In the Snatch category, Zabolotnaya lifted an impressive 120kg and was repeated by the Spaniard Lidia Valentin with a 120kg lift for first and second places respectively. Khurshudyan, after having lifted 111kgs and 116kgs, failed on her third attempt at the 120kg and would earn the Bronze medal in the Snatch category.
In the Clean and Jerk category, Valentin was left in third place lifting only 132kgs, while Khurshudyan was able to surpass her in the total with a 137kg lift. Zabolotnaya however was able to lift 140kgs and 145kgs concescutively, leaving Khurshudyan with a large gap to recover. Similar to Nazik Avdalyan's performance from the day before, Khurshudyan attempted very large jumps from 137kgs to 145 and 150 kgs in her second and third attempts for the Gold medal, but the difference was too large to overcome and Khurshudyan had to settle for the Silver medal.
In tomorrow's action, Artur Babayan will compete in the 105kg category, while Ruben Aleksanyan will conclude the tournament with the Men's 105+kg category on sunday. Stay tuned to Sporting-Armenia.com as we will be convering the events live.
