Planning Your Time on Castle Hill

Buda Castle sits high above the Danube, so it is worth thinking about how you will get up there. The Budavári Sikló, the historic funicular that runs from Clark Ádám tér at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge, is the most atmospheric option, although queues can build up at busy times. City buses also climb the hill, and many visitors simply walk. Footpaths and stairways wind up from the riverside, and the climb rewards you with steadily widening views over Pest and the Parliament building.

The palace complex is home to major cultural institutions, including the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. Their collections cover Hungarian art from medieval altarpieces to modern painting, as well as the long history of the city itself. Exhibitions and opening times change, so check the official websites of the museums before you go, especially if you are planning around a particular temporary show.

Beyond the palace, the wider Castle District repays a slow walk. Matthias Church, with its patterned tiled roof, and the terraces of Fisherman's Bastion are a short stroll away. The quiet medieval streets between them are lined with old townhouses and small courtyards. Much of the area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site covering the Banks of the Danube and the Buda Castle Quarter.

• Arrive early in the morning or come in the evening to avoid the heaviest crowds and to see the city lights from the terraces.
• Wear comfortable shoes, because cobblestones and slopes are everywhere.
• Bring a layer. The hilltop can be windy even on mild days.
• Leave time for the palace courtyards and gardens, which are free to wander and often host seasonal events.
